District recognized nationally for its music program

For the third consecutive year, Bellefonte Area School District was nationally recognized for music education in its schools. The honor came through the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) as part of its Best Communities for Music Education award given to school districts that demonstrate outstanding achievement in efforts to provide music access in education to all students.

“The national recognition of our community’s support of music education is such a tribute to the tradition of excellence that thrives here in Bellefonte,” Elementary Band Director Jayme Zimmerman said in a press release. “I could not be more thankful to be a part of such an outstanding community and district.”

According to NAMM, to qualify for the honor, the district was required to answer detailed questions about funding, graduation requirements, music class participation, instruction time, facilities, support for the music program and community music-making programs. Responses were then verified by school officials and reviewed by the Music Research Institute at the University of Kansas.

“It was inspiring to see our community embrace the changes brought on by the pandemic and continue to find new ways to support our music education programs here at Bellefonte,” fellow district music teacher Jessica Cetnar added. “Our students were allowed new opportunities to perform and grow their music education. Despite numerous setbacks, our parents, administrators and overall community supported these musicians. … As a music educator, you couldn’t wish for a better environment for students to foster a love of music education.”
