Port Matilda Elementary invites veterans to help ‘Raise the Flag’

Port Matilda Elementary took the time to honor all veterans by having them join the students November 11, 2021, outside the school to raise the United States flag. Principal Pighetti began the event by welcoming the veterans to Port Matilda Elementary. The U.S. flag was raised by two fifth-grade students that beautiful sunny morning. Students, teachers and veterans then all said the Pledge of Allegiance together, followed by the playing of the national anthem. Mr. Pighetti thanked the veterans for their service to our country and then turned to the students as they thanked the veterans as well. Students and staff then lined the sidewalk as the veterans walked along waving and taking pictures with children, and grandchildren as the students chanted, “Thank you, veterans,” waving their Bald Eagle blue-and-gold pompoms. Students followed up this event by participating in the Holidays for Heroes campaign, supported by the Red Cross. This included writing holiday cards that will be distributed to veterans in local nursing homes and medical facilities.
