Gretchen Schaible, Josh Merkel, Cody Walkowiak, John Schaible, and Brance Fronheiser won bronze medals at this week’s Envirothon competition.

Under the direction and guidance of Ms. Randi Freed, Palmerton Area Senior High School science teacher, 20 high school students from the Palmerton Area School District competed in the Carbon County Envirothon. Students competed in teams of five in categories such as aquatics, forestry, soil, wildlife and current events. Prior to the competition, all students were required to study resources provided from the Pennsylvania Envirothon, and then they took tests in each area the day of the competition. Students learned a lot because a field professional was present at each station and explained the information to them after each test. Students also had the opportunity to ask the field professionals questions about their careers. One of Palmerton’s competing teams finished in third place. That team consisted of Gretchen Schaible, Josh Merkel, Cody Walkowiak, John Schaible and Brance Fronheiser.
