PSBA is excited to partner with 2024 School Leadership Conference keynote speaker Stevie Van Zandt and his nonprofit TeachRock to provide a full-day professional development event for Pennsylvania educators. From linking math lessons and the billboard charts to building students’ social and emotional wellness through short classroom discussions about music, each session of the day’s workshop will provide insight into how educators in all grade levels and content areas can use TeachRock’s open-access curriculum to support instruction. Registration is free, sponsored by PSBA.

Launched by Stevie Van Zandt with the Founders Board of Bono, Jackson Browne, Martin Scorsese and Bruce Springsteen, Teachrock.org provides free, standards-aligned resources that harness the power and excitement of music and popular culture to inspire student participation and authentic learning experiences in nearly every K-12 subject area, including social and emotional learning and student wellness.

9:00 – 10:00 a.m. ………………Introduction to TeachRock
This workshop introduces the TeachRock methodology, showcasing how music can be used as a powerful tool to foster student engagement and create culturally responsive lessons. Participants will explore a variety of lessons aligned with monthly themes and observances, such as Black History Month, Women’s History Month and Earth Day and will leave with practical strategies and resources that bring learning to life for students of all ages and backgrounds throughout the year.
10:15 – 11:45 a.m. …………….Session 1: Harmony Student Wellness
In this interactive workshop, participants will gain firsthand knowledge and experience with TeachRock’s student wellness program – and probably make a new friend too! Join us for a hands-on exploration of the CASEL-aligned curriculum and discover how Harmony Student Wellness can help foster a sense of community, reduce absenteeism and positively impact school culture.

1:00 – 2:30 p.m. ………………..Session 2: Life Songs: Storytelling Through Music
In this hands-on workshop, teachers will prepare to guide students through Life Songs, a creative intergenerational project in which students interview an adult in their community to record and preserve memories of the musical touchstones of their lives. Participants will discover how Life Songs cultivates valuable media production skills, fosters community connections and deepens students’ understanding of the role music plays within communities.
